If you are planning on a landscape renovation of any kind, chances are you are anxious to start to see a change. You know that adding an outdoor living area with various landscaping elements can really enhance your time spent outside.
For that reason, you likely want to know, how long does it take to do landscaping?
In this article, we’ll dive into what’s involved with the timeline of the landscape construction process in Bozeman, MT.
While every project is obviously different, there are a few considerations to keep in mind.
Beginning with Landscape Design
When beginning a landscape design experience, we understand that most homeowners are really eager to get things moving. But it’s so critical that you don’t rush through the process, particularly with the design phase.
The design is going to be like the “blueprint” for where your project goes and it’s not something to do hastily. These are going to be the plans that are followed when the landscape design build process begins.
In fact, at Blanchford Landscape Group, we have an incredibly complex design process…and for good reason!
This is not just a quick sketch on a piece of paper. We are talking about high-quality design in which a trained and experienced professional has spent numerous hours formulating a plan that is going to eventually become your outdoor living space.
This can take as long as four to eight weeks, depending upon the scope of work.
There is often a lot involved during this time, including the initial program development, base planning, conceptual planning, and final planning.
Once the design is complete, and the construction proposal has been signed by the client, then we will move forward to the landscape construction process.
How Long for a Landscape Design Build Project?
We understand that you want to know how long does it take to do landscaping? But the construction phase itself can be highly variable.
For one, it is largely dependent upon the size and the scope of the project. Obviously, a smaller installation is going to move much quicker than a large outdoor living area (perhaps with multiple “outdoor rooms”).
But the landscape construction process can also be slowed down by the weather.
As you likely already know, we have a limited workable season here in the Bozeman, MT area. Our prime season for the installation of a landscape in the valley is April through October….and in the mountains, it is typically mid-May through October!
For that reason, there are times when a very large-scale project could take more than one season to complete.
It’s fair to say that the landscape construction process can take anywhere from a minimum of six weeks to as long as multiple seasons.
Because of this, it’s not uncommon for homeowners to have very large-scale projects completed in phases. Phase one might be a patio…and perhaps phase two is a whole outdoor fire pit area. As each phase is completed, you have a finished and usable space…and it only gets better and better as future phases are also done.
As the Design Phase Transitions to the Installation of the Landscape, There is Valuable Continuity
One important thing to talk about when thinking about a transition from design to construction is that at Blanchford Landscape Group, we focus on maintaining continuity. Because we are a design/build firm (and handle both entirely in-house), it really is a seamless transition.
Once the design phase is complete, we will introduce you to the production team at another client meeting.
While it’s true that this phase is more about construction than it is about design, we consider it part of our design process as design really does have its hand in all phases.
That means we don’t just pass you off to the production team and disappear. We are there, ensuring design integrity throughout the entire construction process.
This is also important as there are times when changes become necessary. As we mentioned as an example above, sometimes when the construction is already underway, it becomes clear that a particular design change might benefit the project.
Sometimes landscaping companies make mistakes because of a poor transition between the design and build teams. But since we handle both as an integrated force, we prevent a ton of hassles, headaches, and mistakes.
It’s not as though your construction team needs to try to get back in touch with the designer and piece together a change. We’re all involved and have the ability to make those on-site decisions in order to ensure that you wind up with the best possible end result.
Finding a Company that Takes the Landscape Design Build Process Seriously
As you can tell, we take both the design and construction phases of your outdoor living space quite seriously. But it’s important to know that not all landscape companies operate this way…including those that claim to be design/build firms.
While you might find someone who could do things a little faster…is that what you really want? Part of why our process takes a little longer is that we are investing important time on the front-end to prevent critical problems on the back-end.
Too often, landscaping firms rush through work like this and leave the clients unhappy in the end.
But you’re investing too much time, energy, and money into a project like this to let it be a “rush job.”
Even beyond our comprehensive design and build process, Blanchford can also offer the added benefit of sticking with clients for the long haul. Not only do we see projects through the design and construction phases, but we can even see them on to the maintenance stage.
This is a big value-add for our clients who don’t want to go “back to the drawing board” and find a landscape maintenance company to now maintain their finished project. They already know and trust us and they’d rather we continue the relationship and maintain their property. This is an ideal situation as nobody knows the landscape better than us considering the fact that we just designed and built it.
The end result of this is happier clients who are truly getting the most out of their new spaces.
